The AI-Medical CDT is led by the University of Leeds. We work in close partnership with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT), providing an immersive NHS experience for students in healthcare, a vast repository of data, and extensive clinical input. This enables us to provide an outstanding and grounded training experience that maximises the capacity of our graduates to translate research into innovation within the NHS and global healthcare. We are actively involved with leading digital health companies and institutions as partners in our work.

Key organisations within the Leeds digital health ecosystem contribute to our CDT training programme, including Leeds City Council (LCC) and the West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board and Combined Authority (WYCA).

We work closely with NHS England, particularly in the areas of health data analytics and training. This is facilitated by the decision-making and administrative centre for NHS England being in Leeds. NHS England staff work with and study alongside our CDT students on our part-time MRes programme in Data Science and Analytics in Healthcare.

Several of our research students have been part-sponsored by companies such as Leica Biosystems and Roche. They participate in defining the direction of the research and advising as the work progresses.

During their PhD studies, our research students have  the opportunity of a placement or internship with an external organisation. Host organisations include NHS England, Genomics England, Roche, HSBC,  JBA Risk Management, and NPIC, the UK’s largest repository of pathology images.

A range of companies are involved in the delivery of our PhD training programme, provision of research data and supporting the Leeds digital health ecosystem. Optum (formerly EMIS) and TPP run the systems for almost all UK GP practices and are, therefore, crucial when considering the implementation of AI in primary care. Leica Biosystems is a global leader in histopathology workflow from biopsy to diagnosis. Flatiron has world-leading expertise in building health data analytics pipelines working closely with LTHT. HeteroGenius is a Leeds-based company focusing on digital pathology image management and analysis. BJSS and AireLogic helped develop much of the national digital NHS infrastructure and the systems used by Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. We also link to the Microsoft developer community through Black Marble, who are involved in our teaching.
